A highly lethal viral disease of domestic pigs and wild boar, with mortality often approaching 100 percent in acute outbreaks and no approved vaccine in widespread commercial use. Endemic in parts of sub-Saharan Africa for a century, it spread into Eastern Europe in 2007 and then into China and much of East and Southeast Asia from 2018, killing or leading to the culling of hundreds of millions of pigs and severely disrupting global pork supply.

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a large, double-stranded DNA virus in the Asfarviridae family. It is the causative agent of African swine fever (ASF). The virus causes a hemorrhagic fever with high mortality rates in domestic pigs; some isolates can cause death of animals as quickly as a week after infection. It persistently infects its natural hosts, warthogs, bushpigs, and soft ticks of the genus Ornithodoros, which likely act as a vector, with no disease signs.
