Mini Rex is a rabbit breed developed in the United States as a miniaturized version of the standard Rex rabbit, carrying the same short, dense, plush coat caused by a fur mutation that suppresses the long guard hairs most rabbits carry, leaving a velvet-like texture. Breeders scaled the Rex down through selective crossing with smaller stock until the American Rabbit Breeders Association recognized Mini Rex as its own breed in the 1980s. It is bred in a wide range of recognized colors and remains one of the most popular rabbit breeds kept for showing and as a pet, valued for its calm temperament and distinctive fur alongside the larger standard Rex.
