The best known member of the guinea fowl family, Numididae, and the only species in the genus Numida. Native to Africa, mainly south of the Sahara, it has been widely introduced elsewhere as a domesticated farm bird, into the West Indies, North America, Colombia, Brazil, Australia and Europe, kept for meat and eggs and, on some farms, as a noisy sentinel against predators and intruders.
