English Spot is an old rabbit breed developed in England in the nineteenth century, bred from various spotted rabbit stock to fix a specific pattern of markings known as Englishman's markings: a butterfly-shaped marking across the nose, a colored stripe running down the spine known as the herringbone, and a row of round spots along each side of the body. It is a medium-sized breed kept mainly for showing, where breeders judge animals closely against the precise spotting pattern the standard requires. English Spot rabbits are generally active and playful compared to some other fancy breeds, a trait attributed to their descent from athletic historic spotted rabbit lines. The breed remains popular in rabbit shows in both England and the United States.
