Buffalypso

The Buffalypso, also called the Trinidadian buffalo, is a breed of water buffalo developed in Trinidad in the early 1960s by veterinarian Stephen Bennett, who crossed swamp-type carabao with several river-type buffalo varieties to create an improved dual-purpose animal. The breed was bred for both milk and meat production, showed increased resistance to bovine tuberculosis compared with its ancestors, and provided strong draft power for Trinidad's sugarcane industry while efficiently digesting fibrous plant material. Its name blends buffalo with calypso, the musical style of Trinidad and Tobago, and though interest in the breed declined by the early 2000s, it has since been exported to Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Costa Rica and other parts of the Western Hemisphere.
