African Goose

African Goose, despite its name, is a domestic goose breed most likely developed in Asia, believed to descend at least in part from the wild swan goose of eastern Asia, the same wild ancestor behind the Chinese Goose breed, with which it shares a large knob at the base of the bill. It is one of the heaviest standard goose breeds, with a stout, deep body, a prominent dewlap and a large basal knob, bred primarily for meat rather than egg production. The breed's name is thought to reflect the trade routes through which it reached Europe and North America rather than any actual African origin, a naming pattern seen in a number of other historic livestock breeds. African Goose is kept today mainly as a large exhibition and backyard breed rather than for large-scale commercial meat production.
