Wool Press

Dairy and Livestock Processing Implements

A wool press is a machine that compresses classed wool into a standard sized and weighted bale for transport and sale, work carried out in larger shearing sheds by a dedicated wool presser who keeps the wool free of contamination before pressing and brands and documents each bale afterward. Early presses relied on wood frames and a hand cranked wire winch, and standardized wooden presses such as the Koerstz and the Ferrier appeared in the late nineteenth century, with the Ferrier press used around the world from roughly 1871 to 1918. Modern wool presses are power operated, pin themselves automatically and weigh the bale as they press it, a considerable gain in shearing shed productivity over the manual presses that came before.
