A manure spreader is a farm machine that distributes animal manure across a field as fertilizer, replacing the labor of spreading it by hand; a modern spreader is typically a trailer towed behind a tractor with a rotating mechanism driven by the tractor power take off. Joseph Kemp built the first successful automated manure spreader in 1875, a ground driven, horse drawn design that he manufactured through his own company before selling the technology to International Harvester in 1906. Joseph Oppenheim of Ohio brought out the first wide spreading manure spreader in 1899, whose paddles threw manure outward in a broad pattern so farmers no longer had to spread it further by hand, and his New Idea Spreader Company grew into one of the industry leading manufacturers.
