Rural Development

Agricultural and Extension Education Services

Rural development is the process of improving the quality of life and the economic well being of people living in rural areas, traditionally centered on the resource extraction economies of agriculture and forestry but now also encompassing rural tourism, niche manufacturing and recreation as rural economies diversify. Because rural areas differ so much from one another, the field favors locally driven, context specific strategies over a single uniform model, and treats education, entrepreneurship, and physical and social infrastructure as equally necessary to raising a region's prospects. Its more recent emphasis is on community participation and decentralized decision making, in place of development imposed from outside.
