Verghese Kurien (1921 to 2012) was an Indian dairy engineer and social entrepreneur who led the initiatives that became known as India's White Revolution, the extensive increase in the country's milk production. Sent by the Government of India in 1949 to run its experimental creamery at Anand, he set up the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union in 1950, which grew into Amul, organizing dairy farmers into cooperatives that linked them directly to milk consumers without middlemen; in 1965 he was appointed head of the newly formed National Dairy Development Board, which helped establish similar cooperatives across India.
