Robert Mumford Smock, 1908 to 1986, was an American scientist and professor at Cornell University. Known for his research over more than two decades in controlled atmosphere cold storage, his work led to the use of controlled atmosphere rooms in the United States beginning in the 1950s and later throughout the world. The method he developed made it possible to extend the shelf life of fruits, especially apples, throughout the year.
