Obed Hussey (1792 to 1860) was an American inventor best known for his reaping machine, patented in 1833, a year before Cyrus McCormick patented a rival design. Hussey was the first person to make, patent and sell a mechanical reaper in the United States, and although McCormick's machine eventually dominated the market, Hussey's reciprocating knife and slotted guard finger cutting mechanism became the standard design used in later harvesting machinery. He also invented a steam plow and several other agricultural and mechanical devices.
