Margarete von Wrangell was a pioneering agricultural chemist who in 1923 became the first woman to hold a full professorship at a German university, leading the Institute for Plant Nutrition she founded at the Agricultural Research Station in Hohenheim until her death in 1932. Beginning work at Hohenheim in 1918 and heading its department from 1920, she focused her research on plant nutrition and soil chemistry, completing a 1920 habilitation on the uptake of phosphoric acid and soil reactions and publishing influential work on fertilization; two German institutions, a foundation established in 1992 and a habilitation program for women launched in 1997, later carried her name in her honor.
