Martinus Th. van Genuchten

Soil Sciences

Martinus Theodorus "Rien" van Genuchten, born February 13, 1945, is a Dutch soil physicist and hydrologist affiliated with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and Utrecht University, known for his research on water flow and solute transport in unsaturated porous media. His 1980 paper produced the soil hydraulic model widely known as the Mualem-van Genuchten model, now extensively used to describe soil-water retention and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity, and he contributed to modeling software including RETC, CXTFIT, STANMOD and the HYDRUS family of programs. He received the Wolf Prize in Agriculture in 2023 for his work on water flow and contaminant transport in soils.

Defining Contribution
Developed the widely used van Genuchten equation for soil-water retention and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity, published in 1980 and combined with Mualem's pore-size model into the Mualem-van Genuchten model used throughout soil physics and vadose zone hydrology. 1
