James Irvin (politician)

James Irvin, born February 18, 1800, and died November 28, 1862, was an American agriculturalist and ironmaster from Centre County, Pennsylvania, who represented the state's 14th and 17th congressional districts in the United States House of Representatives from 1841 to 1845. He ran unsuccessfully for governor of Pennsylvania in 1847, and his donation of 200 acres of land became the site of the Farmer's High School, the institution that grew into Pennsylvania State University; Irvin Hall, one of the university's oldest residence halls, is named in his honor.
