Hugh Hammond Bennett (1881 to 1960) was a pioneer of soil conservation in the United States who headed the Soil Erosion Service, the federal agency now known as the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Born near Wadesboro, North Carolina, and a 1903 graduate of the University of North Carolina, he worked as a soil surveyor immediately after graduation, and his soil studies in the United States and abroad convinced him that soil erosion was a serious problem facing the planet.
