Benjamin Holt

Agricultural Mechanization

Benjamin Leroy Holt (1849 to 1920) was an American businessman and inventor who patented and manufactured the first practical crawler-type tread tractor. The continuous track he developed spreads a heavy vehicle's weight over a large area to keep it from sinking into soft ground, a design still used on heavy agricultural and engineering vehicles, and he founded the Holt Manufacturing Company with his brothers to build it.

Developed

Why this is disputed. Holt patented and manufactured the first practical crawler-type tracked tractor; the tractor as a whole category has multiple credited pioneers (Froelich, Hart-Parr among them), so this is one attested contribution, not sole-inventor credit
