Eugene Woldemar Hilgard (1833 to 1916) was a German-American soil scientist regarded as the father of modern soil science in the United States. An authority on climate as a soil-forming factor, soil chemistry and the reclamation of alkali soils, his research helped establish pedology, the scientific study of soil resources, as its own discipline.
