Devi Lal, born September 25, 1914, and died April 6, 2001, was an Indian statesman known as "Tau", or elder uncle, for his grassroots appeal among farmers, who served as Deputy Prime Minister of India under two prime ministers, V. P. Singh from December 1989 to August 1990 and Chandra Shekhar from November 1990 to June 1991. He built his political career as an advocate for rural and agrarian interests, leading a farmers' movement in the 1950s that won amendments to the Muzzara Act, served twice as Chief Minister of Haryana in 1977 to 1979 and 1987 to 1989, and founded the Indian National Lok Dal in 1996.
