Bill Mollison

Bill Mollison (1928 to 2016) was an Australian researcher, author, scientist, teacher and biologist who co-developed permaculture, an integrated system of ecological and environmental design for a perennial and sustainable form of agriculture, with David Holmgren beginning in 1974. Their 1978 book Permaculture One introduced the design system to the public, and Mollison went on to found the Permaculture Institute in Tasmania and to build a formal Permaculture Design Course and Certification that has since trained hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. He also invented the herb spiral, a compact structure for growing herbs with differing needs together, and received the Right Livelihood Award in 1981 for developing and promoting permaculture.
