Katherine Esau (1898 to 1997) was a pioneering German-American botanist who studied plant anatomy and the effects of viruses on plants. Her books Plant Anatomy and Anatomy of Seed Plants became key texts in the field. In 1989 she received the National Medal of Science in recognition of her pioneering research on plant structure and development spanning more than six decades and for her role as an educator and mentor to generations of plant biologists.
