The garden strawberry, usually called simply strawberry, is a widely grown hybrid plant cultivated worldwide for its fruit, prized for its aroma, bright red color and sweetness. It was first bred in Brittany, France, in the 1750s, crossing a North American species with a Chilean species brought to France in 1714, and its cultivars have since replaced the older musk strawberry in commercial production.
