Jute

Fibre and Other Industrial Crops

Jute is a long, rough bast fiber spun into coarse, strong thread, historically central to the economy and culture of Bengal, including present-day Bangladesh, West Bengal and Assam. It has been cultivated since the third millennium BC, with early use traced to the Indus Valley civilisation, and remains valuable today as a biodegradable material for sacking, hessian cloth, carpet backing and erosion-control matting, alongside long-standing culinary use of its leaves.
