Slash-and-char is an alternative to slash-and-burn cultivation that has a lesser effect on the environment. It is the practice of charring the biomass produced by slashing instead of burning it, and because the incomplete combustion of this pyrolysis leaves behind a charcoal residue, the resulting matter can be used as biochar to improve soil fertility.
