Tenant farming is an arrangement in which a farmer works land owned by someone else in exchange for rent, paid either as a fixed cash or produce amount or as a share of the harvest under sharecropping, without the tenant holding title to the land itself. Its terms of security, whether a tenancy is long enough and protected enough for the tenant to invest in the land, are a recurring subject of agrarian land reform.
