The industrial fixation of atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia, demonstrated by Fritz Haber in 1909 and scaled by Carl Bosch at BASF by 1913. Synthetic nitrogen fertilizer broke the ancient ceiling that manure, legumes and mined nitrate had set on yields; the nitrogen in the food of roughly half the people alive passed through this process, which also consumes one to two percent of the world's energy.
