Germplasm is the living genetic material, seeds, tissue, cuttings, semen or embryos, that carries a plant or animal's hereditary information and is collected and maintained specifically so a breeder or conservation program can propagate that genetic line again. Germplasm collections held in genebanks and breeding programs are the working raw material from which new crop varieties and livestock breeds are developed.
