Smallholder farming is agriculture carried out on a small area of land, generally by a single family using mostly family labor for both subsistence and modest market sale, rather than at the scale or with the capital of a commercial farming operation. Smallholders make up the large majority of the world's farms and, in many lower-income countries, produce most of the food consumed domestically, which is why smallholder productivity and market access are central to global food-security policy.
