Agricultural mechanization is the replacement of human and animal labor in farming with powered machinery, from the horse-drawn and steam implements of the nineteenth century through the tractor, the combine harvester and today's increasingly automated equipment, which sharply raised the amount of land and livestock one farm worker could manage. It is one of the central drivers of the shrinking farm workforce and rural-to-urban migration that accompanied agricultural modernization across the industrialized world during the twentieth century.
