Agricultural biotechnology is the application of biological science and technology, genetic engineering, gene editing, tissue culture, molecular marker selection and related techniques, to modify or select crop and livestock traits, distinct from conventional selective breeding in the precision and speed with which it can introduce or edit specific genetic material. It underlies both the genetically modified crops of the Gene Revolution and less publicly controversial applications such as marker-assisted breeding and disease diagnostics.
