The Piedmontese is a breed of domestic cattle that originated in the Piedmont region of north-west Italy. Calves are born fawn coloured and turn grey-white as they mature, and purebred animals carry a gene mutation, also found in the Belgian Blue, that inactivates myostatin and causes hypertrophic double muscling. The breed has drawn interest from beef cattle breeders elsewhere in the world, and imports into Canada in the late 1970s and the United States in the early 1980s became the foundation stock for a related North American Piedmontese breed.
