A French breed of taurine beef cattle from the Charolais region around Charolles in the Saone-et-Loire department of eastern France's Bourgogne-Franche-Comte region, with a coat that ranges from white to wheaten. Charolais are among the largest cattle breeds, bulls weighing 1,000 to 1,650 kilograms and cows 700 to 1,200 kilograms, both sexes naturally horned and marked by uniformly pink noses. The breed is used exclusively for beef production and has contributed its genetics to crossbred cattle such as the Brazilian Canchim and the Charbray, a cross with Brahman. Charolais is the most common beef breed in France and ranks second only to the Holstein Friesian among all French cattle breeds in total numbers.
