Brown Swiss Cattle

The Brown Swiss, also called the American Brown Swiss, is an American breed of dairy cattle that derives from the traditional triple-purpose Braunvieh of the Alpine region of Europe but has diverged substantially from it. It was selectively bred for dairy qualities alone, so its ancestors' draft and beef capabilities were lost, and its milk yield was measured in 2013 at just over ten thousand kilograms per year, with milk suitable for cheesemaking. In the twentieth century it became a world breed, with a global population estimated at seven million head in 1990, and it has been widely used in cross-breeding other cattle.
