Cholistani Cattle

The Cholistani is a zebu breed of cattle from the Cholistan Desert region of Punjab, Pakistan, centered on Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar. It is thought to have arisen from crossbreeding Sahiwal cattle with other local stock, and is recognized by its white coat marked with black, brown or red spots, small horns and an unusually large hump. Bulls weigh around 600 kilograms and cows around 400 kilograms. The breed is kept for a triple purpose of milk, meat and draft labor, with cows producing 7 to 12 liters of milk a day and yields rising to 15 to 20 liters when crossed with Holstein Friesians.
