Punganur Cattle

The Punganur is an Indian breed of small zebu cattle from Chitoor District in Andhra Pradesh, reared mainly in hilly country up to 1,500 meters, and ranks among the smallest of all zebu breeds: bulls stand only about 107 centimeters tall and weigh around 240 kilograms, and cows about 97 centimeters and 170 kilograms. It is white, grey, brown or red, rarely black, with small crescent-shaped horns, and is kept for both draught work and milk, giving roughly 2.07 kilograms of milk a day at 5 percent fat. Once critically endangered, the FAO reclassified it from critical in 2007 to not at risk in 2024 after its population recovered to an estimated 9,876 to 13,275 animals.
