Montbeliarde Cattle

The Montbeliarde is a French dairy breed named for the area around Montbeliard in the Doubs departement of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comte region, red-pied with a white head and short horns. Cows weigh 600 to 700 kilograms and stand about 145 centimeters, bulls 900 to 1,200 kilograms, and the breed is used mainly for dairying, especially cheesemaking, averaging around 7,486 liters of milk a year at 3.9 percent fat and 3.45 percent protein; a high frequency of the kappa casein BB variant improves cheese yield. France holds about 400,000 recorded Montbeliarde cows, and the breed has spread widely and become popular for crossing with Holsteins, which it tends to outperform in longevity, fertility and udder health.
