Boran Cattle

Cattle and Cattle Breeds

Boran Cattle is a zebu-derived beef cattle breed of East Africa, developed through centuries of selection by the pastoralist Boran people of southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya for hardiness on the region's semi-arid rangeland. The breed is valued for its tolerance of heat, drought and the ticks and diseases common to tropical grazing conditions, together with a calm temperament and good mothering ability that suit extensive, low-input cattle ranching. Boran cattle became an important commercial beef breed in Kenya during the twentieth century as ranchers refined the traditional pastoral stock through more formal selective breeding, and the breed has since been exported to other tropical and subtropical cattle-raising countries, including Australia and parts of southern Africa. It remains closely associated with pastoralist cattle culture across the Horn of Africa, where herding Boran cattle has long been central to Borana social and economic life.
