Angus Cattle

Cattle and Cattle Breeds

A Scottish beef cattle breed, properly the Aberdeen Angus and often called simply Angus, that derives from cattle native to the counties of Aberdeen, Banff, Kincardine and Angus in northeastern Scotland. The cattle are naturally polled and solid black or red, hardy enough to have evolved surviving harsh Scottish winters, with cows typically weighing around 550 kilograms and bulls about 850 kilograms; before formal standardization the hornless local cattle carried regional names, Angus Doddies in Angus and Buchan Humlies in Buchan, both meaning polled animals. The breed gained formal recognition in 1835 and a breed society followed in 1879. Angus cattle are reared principally for beef and have been exported worldwide, building large populations in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States; in 2018 the breed accounted for more than 17 percent of UK beef production, and its meat is especially prized in Japan for its marbling.
