Droughtmaster Cattle

The Droughtmaster is an Australian breed of beef cattle developed from about 1915 in North Queensland by crossing zebu cattle, mainly with Beef Shorthorns, making it roughly half Bos indicus and half Bos taurus and the first Australian taurindicine hybrid breed. Always red with a short, soft coat, either horned or polled, cows average about 695 kilograms and 137 centimeters and bulls about 1,000 kilograms and 168 centimeters; it excels in drought, heat, tick-borne disease and sun exposure. It has been exported across Africa, Oceania, Central and South America and Southeast Asia, and as of 2025 its worldwide population was estimated at 21,473, classed as not at risk.
