Devon Cattle

The Devon, also called the Devon Ruby or Red Ruby, is a traditional British beef cattle breed that originated in Devon in Englands West Country, with a herdbook established in 1850 and the Devon Cattle Breeders Society formed in 1884. It is known for its deep rich red coat and thick-necked build, with mature bulls averaging around 980 kilograms and cows around 630 kilograms. Historically a triple-purpose breed used for meat, milk and draught work, it is now bred principally for beef. By 1908 its population had grown to roughly 500,000, making it the second most numerous cattle breed in Britain after the Shorthorn, and the breed also became popular in Australia for bullock teams valued for their docility, hardiness and strength.
