Kangayam Cattle

The Kangayam is an Indian breed of zebu cattle from Kongu Nadu, the region around Coimbatore near the border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, though it is now kept over a wider area. Calves are born red and turn grey by about two years old, with cows grey to dark grey and bulls darker, sometimes black, on the head and forequarters; animals stand 125 to 140 centimeters tall and weigh 340 to 525 kilograms. It is one of Tamil Nadu's two principal draught breeds and is also used in bull racing and the traditional sport of jallikattu, giving comparatively little milk, and its population has fallen sharply, from about 479,000 head in 1996 to between roughly 127,500 and 152,500 by 2022; it was also exported to Brazil, where it is known as the Cangaian.
