Japanese Black Cattle

The Japanese Black is a Japanese breed of beef cattle, one of six native Japanese cattle breeds and one of the four breeds collectively known as wagyu, alongside the Japanese Brown, Japanese Polled and Japanese Shorthorn. Like the other wagyu breeds, it was developed through cross-breeding in the early twentieth century of native Japanese cattle with imported stock, in this case drawing on European breeds including the Braunvieh, Shorthorn, Devon, Simmental, Ayrshire and Friesian. It accounts for the large majority of wagyu cattle raised in Japan today.
