Dhanni Cattle

The Dhanni is a Pakistani breed of draught cattle of zebu type, raised across six districts of Punjab province: Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mianwali, Rawalpindi and Sargodha, where it is also known as Dhani, Awankari, Pahari, Pakhari or Pothwari. It is a medium-sized animal, with cows averaging 285 kilograms and bulls 412 kilograms, most commonly white with black spots though other mottled and red-and-white patterns occur, and both sexes carry short horns. Valued chiefly as a fast, quick-stepping draught breed capable of powering machinery, it is also milked, with historical lactation yields of roughly 700 to 765 kilograms recorded. The FAO listed the breed as not at risk in 2007, though its status was reclassified as unknown in 2025 for lack of recent population data.
