Aubrac Cattle

The Aubrac is a French breed of cattle concentrated on the Plateau de l'Aubrac spanning the departements of Aveyron, Cantal and Lozere, where almost 90 percent of the breed is still found. It is wheat-colored with pale greyish-white to light brown tinges, black skin, hooves, muzzle, tongue and switch, a pale ring around the muzzle, and lyre-shaped horns with black tips; bulls weigh about 950 kilograms and stand 140 centimeters, cows about 650 kilograms and 129 centimeters. Once used for draught work and dairying, it is now raised chiefly for beef, is described as robust, frugal, fertile and long-lived with strong mountain adaptation and reported resistance to trypanosomiasis, and its population has grown from about 170,000 head in 2014 to more than 506,000 by 2021.
