Rowland Edmund Prothero, 1st Baron Ernle, was an English agriculturalist, author, barrister and Unionist politician, born 6 September 1851 and died 1 July 1937. After a brief legal career and prolific writing on agricultural matters, he became land agent for the 11th Duke of Bedford in 1898 and entered Parliament as MP for Oxford University in 1914. He served as President of the Board of Agriculture from 10 December 1916 to 15 August 1919, implementing wartime agricultural policy including a guaranteed wheat price and an expanded cultivation campaign.
