Hilary James Wedgwood Benn, born November 26, 1953, is a British politician who has served as Member of Parliament for Leeds South, formerly Leeds Central, since 1999, and who served as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 2024 to 2026. He was appointed Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on June 28, 2007, following Gordon Brown's election as Labour leader and David Miliband's promotion to Foreign Secretary, and served until May 11, 2010. As environment secretary he introduced and implemented the Climate Change Act 2008 and was responsible for the government's response to the threat of bovine tuberculosis to cattle.
