Fred Peart, Baron Peart

Thomas Frederick Peart, Baron Peart, born April 30, 1914, and died August 26, 1988, was a British Labour politician and Member of Parliament for Workington from 1945 to 1976 who was at one point a candidate for Deputy Leader of the party. He served as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food from 1964 to 1968, a tenure that saw advances in pay for agricultural laborers and in farming technology, and returned to the same post from 1974 to 1976 when Labour regained power. He was created a life peer in 1976 to serve as Leader of the House of Lords and Lord Privy Seal, later becoming Shadow Leader of the House of Lords.
