Cledwyn Hughes, Baron Cledwyn of Penrhos

Cledwyn Hughes, Baron Cledwyn of Penrhos, born September 14, 1916, and died February 22, 2001, was a Welsh Labour politician associated with the party's moderate wing who represented Anglesey in Parliament from 1951 to 1979. He served as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food from 1968 to 1970, promoting home food production and managing the consequences of foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks, having earlier served as Minister of State for Commonwealth Relations and Secretary of State for Wales, where he responded to the Aberfan disaster. He later chaired the Parliamentary Labour Party and served as Leader of the Opposition in the House of Lords from 1982 to 1992.
