Virender Lal Chopra was an Indian biotechnologist and geneticist who contributed to the development of wheat production in India across a career centered on agricultural research administration. He served as director of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute beginning in 1979, overseeing research planning in genetics and biotechnology, and later became director-general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, the country's apex agency for agricultural education and research. He authored books including Plant Breeding: Theory and Practice and Breeding Field Crops, worked on incorporating drought and salinity resistance into crop plants, and served as chief technical adviser to the Vietnamese government on an FAO assignment that helped establish the Agriculture Genetics Institute in Hanoi.
