Rafi Ahmed Kidwai, born February 18, 1894, in Barabanki District, Uttar Pradesh, and died October 24, 1954, was an Indian independence activist and politician who took part in the Khilafat Movement and the Non-cooperation movement of 1919 to 1922 after graduating from Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College. He served as Home Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1946, then as independent India's first Union Minister of Communications from 1947 to 1952 under Jawaharlal Nehru, and finally as Union Minister of Food and Agriculture from 1952 until his death in 1954, working during that tenure to address widespread food rationing. He died in Delhi from heart failure following an asthma attack while delivering a speech.
